Mannitol, taken orally, is an osmotic laxative, draws water into the intestinal lumen and increases the volume and softness of the stool.
It can also be used as an alternative sweetener to traditional sucrose.
Its sweetening power is approximately 50% of that of table sugar, with the advantage of being low-calorie and with a metabolism independent of insulin.
